As a graphic designer I am interested in the word “resolution,” and the ways that our terminology and practices both imply and control visibility. My work this year critiques the ways design has been used to hide environmental issues, and explores how graphic design can make the climate crisis palpable, urgent, and worth caring about. My projects investigate graphic design as a rhetorical vehicle for a sustainable agenda. My graduate practice investigates sites of ecological harm that are hiding in plain sight. I dig into the immateriality of crypto-mining, the invisibility of the Internet, and the veil of language that makes these disappearances possible. I speculate on the plasticity of language and its power to manipulate, disguise, bury, and warp the climate crisis. In all of my projects, I explore how environmental crises can be made visible, comprehensible, and ultimately, understood. 17:54:33 +0000 Makena Janssen https://makenajanssendesign.cargo.site/CHARISMATIC-FACTS Charismatic Facts is a term and project inspired by “The Distance Plan #5 Charismatic Facts: Climate Change, Poetry, and Prose.” It’s a small publication with a bold, all-caps manifesto shouting on the cover. The case is made for “charismatic facts” as portable, quickly disseminating tools for climate activism. In the publication, authors Abby Cunnane, Lina Moe, and Amy Howden-Chapman, define a charismatic fact as “a conceptual framework, an open possibility for asking what language can accomplish, how climate facts can be honed and taken up for immediate use.”&nbsp; Leveraging an un-leveraged information space –the great outdoors– my Charismatic Facts posters, transfer the information platform from the screen to real life. The digital fact has lost its integrity and its gravity. Drowned out by an incomprehensible number of facts and fake-facts, the internet has become a place so overloaded with information that a piece of language, however condensed and empirically true, becomes entirely illegible, disputable, unrecognizable, and entirely ignored. By bringing facts into the physical world, Charismatic Fact Posters aim to increase their communication, reception, and impact. It’s not radical to assume that things we can see are easier to comprehend than those we can not see. The internet is one of those things that we can not see, and thus have difficulty comprehending. The internet remains invisible to the untrained eye. It seamlessly blends into the computer, rendering itself as an immaterial feature of the screen. Capra’s book Web of Life, our goal was to show how everything in nature is an interconnected system. The words and letters operate as members of our visual ecosyste, climbing up and through the illustration like living organisms. Like nutrients the letters climb up the stem of the plant, dropping seeds for insects to carry and be fed back into the ground. The poster is show cases a natural cycle. Our making process illustrates nature’s ability to create order out of chaos. We achieved this by allowing the typography to be placed freely on the page, not overthinking where each letter was stuck. Earth’s surface reflects the growth, change, and destruction of our choices over time. Too often we view the land as a blank page for our writing, without consideration of the impact that our scratches will have on earth’s ecosystems, and other life. My work is an examination of our different mark-making on the land. Expanding upon a printmaking series I made on the topic, this AR rendering showcases the ever expansiveness of this human take over. Experienced through the first person view, the viewer is forced to traverse through these scratches, coming to terms with our treatment of the earth. It reflects our choices, their consequences, and it explores the motivation behind them.
